Abstract

This study examines the optimization of cross-border trade and Special Economic Zones as strategic instruments for strengthening Indonesia–Malaysia economic cooperation in border areas. Border regions between Indonesia and Malaysia have long served as dynamic economic spaces shaped by proximity, social interaction, cultural ties, and daily trade. However, cross-border trade has not yet fully contributed to local economic transformation due to infrastructure limitations, regulatory differences, informal trade practices, weak logistics systems, and limited capacity of local business actors. Using a library research method with a descriptive-qualitative approach, this study analyzes academic literature, policy documents, official reports, and recent studies related to cross-border trade, Special Economic Zones, and bilateral economic cooperation. The findings indicate that cross-border trade serves as an economic foundation for border communities, while Special Economic Zones can provide added value through investment, industrial processing, logistics development, export facilitation, and employment creation. The integration of these two instruments can transform border areas from peripheral zones into productive and competitive cross-border economic corridors. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of regulatory harmonization, infrastructure connectivity, institutional coordination, digital trade systems, and empowerment of local communities and SMEs. The renewal of the Indonesia–Malaysia Border Trade Agreement provides an important legal foundation, but its effectiveness depends on practical implementation and multi-stakeholder collaboration. This study concludes that optimizing cross-border trade and Special Economic Zones can strengthen bilateral economic cooperation, enhance local economic resilience, reduce dependency, and support ASEAN regional economic integration.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the development of the image of the Indonesia–Malaysia border region as a center for cross-border economic and tourism activities. Border areas are no longer viewed merely as administrative and security zones, but also as strategic spaces for economic growth, cultural interaction, tourism development, and bilateral cooperation. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with a library research method. Data were obtained from secondary sources, including scientific journal articles, books, policy documents, institutional reports, and relevant previous studies. The analysis was conducted through literature selection, thematic classification, content analysis, and conceptual synthesis. The findings show that the Indonesia–Malaysia border region has strong potential through cross-border trade, cultural proximity, natural attractions, local communities, micro, small, and medium enterprises, and border infrastructure. However, this potential has not been optimally transformed into a strong regional image due to limited promotion, infrastructure gaps, weak destination governance, and the persistent perception of border areas as peripheral regions. Therefore, regional image development needs to be integrated with destination branding, regional branding, infrastructure improvement, local community empowerment, tourism product development, and cross-border institutional cooperation. The study concludes that the Indonesia–Malaysia border region can be positioned as a competitive cross-border economic and tourism hub if its image is developed consistently based on local identity, accessibility, service quality, and Indonesia–Malaysia collaboration.

Abstract

This study discusses Indonesia’s border economy as a strategic space shaped by economic dependence, cross-border cooperation, and development challenges. Border areas are not only territorial boundaries of state sovereignty but also dynamic zones of social, cultural, and economic interaction between local communities and neighboring countries. Using a library research method, this study analyzes relevant literature, including academic journals, policy documents, and institutional reports, on border economies, cross-border trade, regional cooperation, and local development. The findings show that economic dependence in Indonesia’s border areas is mainly caused by geographical proximity to neighboring countries, limited domestic infrastructure, weak distribution networks, price differences, and easier access to external markets. Cross-border trade, both formal and informal, plays an important role in supporting local livelihoods, but it also raises governance issues, such as weak monitoring, unrecorded transactions, and potential smuggling. Furthermore, cross-border cooperation is identified as a strategic instrument to transform dependency into productive interdependence. However, this transformation requires stronger infrastructure, integrated governance, local economic empowerment, and active participation from the central government, local authorities, business actors, and border communities. The study concludes that Indonesia’s border economy should not be viewed merely as a peripheral or security-based issue, but as a potential regional growth center. Therefore, development strategies must combine protection of sovereignty, improvement of welfare, local competitiveness, and sustainable cross-border cooperation.

Abstract

This study examines the economic transformation of Indonesia’s border regions through infrastructure strengthening, cross-border collaboration, and local community empowerment. Border regions are no longer viewed merely as peripheral areas or territorial boundaries, but as strategic spaces with the potential to become new centers of regional economic growth. However, many Indonesian border areas still face structural challenges, including limited infrastructure, weak local economic capacity, dependence on neighboring countries, inadequate cross-border governance, and restricted access to markets, capital, technology, and information. This study employs a library research method with a descriptive, qualitative approach, reviewing relevant scholarly articles, government reports, policy documents, and recent literature on border development, regional economies, infrastructure, cross-border cooperation, and community empowerment. The findings indicate that infrastructure development plays a fundamental role in improving connectivity, reducing regional isolation, lowering logistics costs, and expanding access to public services and economic opportunities. Cross-border collaboration contributes to strengthening legal trade, regional mobility, tourism, investment, and people-to-people relations. Meanwhile, local community empowerment is essential to ensure that border communities become active economic actors rather than passive beneficiaries of development. The study concludes that the economic transformation of Indonesia’s border regions requires an integrative development model that simultaneously connects infrastructure, cross-border cooperation, and local empowerment. Such a model is expected to promote inclusive, collaborative, and sustainable border development while strengthening national sovereignty, local welfare, and regional competitiveness.
