Abstract

This study examines the concept of al-Badal within the Utsmanic script (rasm ‘Utsmānī) as an essential component of the Qur’anic manuscript writing system. Al-Badal refers to the substitution of one letter for another in specific words whose orthography differs from that of the standard Arabic script (rasm Imlā’ī). The aim of this research is to explain the definition, theoretical foundations, and applications of al-Badal in selected words found in the Utsmanic muṣḥaf. This study employs a library research method by analyzing classical and contemporary literature on Qur’anic orthography as well as relevant modern studies. The findings indicate that letter substitution in al-Badal is not a deviation in writing but reflects linguistic, phonetic, and semantic considerations that preserve the diversity of qirā’āt and the authenticity of the revealed text. The study highlights that the Utsmanic script possesses a unique and purposeful writing system that continues to be maintained in modern Qur’anic manuscripts

Abstract

This study explores the aesthetic and rhetorical dimensions of the Qur’anic discourse through an in-depth stylistic analysis of the repetitive phrase “waylun yauma’iżin lil-mukażżibīn” in Surah Al-Mursalat. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and a linguistic-stylistic tafsīr approach, the research draws upon six stylistic frameworks, repetition (tikrār), structural placement, phonostylistics, semantic variation, sound patterning, and rhetorical function. The findings reveal that the recurrence of this verse transcends mere rhetorical ornamentation; it serves as a theological and emotional reinforcement of divine warnings directed toward those who reject the truth. Each repetition emerges within distinct contextual frames, yet collectively constructs a cohesive structure of moral and spiritual resonance. Moreover, the rhythmic articulation of the verse enhances both its phonetic harmony and aesthetic power, illustrating the Qur’an’s capacity to intertwine linguistic artistry with spiritual depth. Conclusively, this research demonstrates that the Qur’anic language embodies an integrated system of meaning and beauty, where style becomes substance, and underscores the need for more advanced stylistic inquiry into the linguistic and spiritual dimensions of the Qur’an.

Abstract

The semantic approach is one of the linguistic approaches that plays a significant role in Qur’anic exegesis by providing a comprehensive understanding of lexical, grammatical, and contextual meanings. This study aims to explain the concept of the semantic approach, describe its application procedures in Qur’anic exegesis, and analyze its significance in producing more profound and contextual interpretations of the Qur’an. This research employs a qualitative library research method. The data were collected from books, scholarly journals, articles, and other relevant academic sources and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method based on Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic approach, focusing on basic meaning, relational meaning, and lexical, grammatical, and contextual analyses. The findings reveal that the semantic approach not only examines the primary meaning of Qur’anic vocabulary but also explores the interrelationship between concepts within the Qur’anic linguistic system, the diachronic and synchronic development of meanings, and their connection to historical and social contexts. The application of this approach to the concepts of tabarruj, al-Muzzammil, and nafs wāḥidah demonstrates that the meanings of Qur’anic verses are shaped by linguistic relations, grammatical structures, and contextual usage. Therefore, the semantic approach contributes to producing more objective, comprehensive, contextual, and relevant interpretations of the Qur’an while preserving its fundamental values in addressing contemporary issues.
