Abstract

Preschool children are in a period of rapid development called the golden age, where they begin to learn to be independent, including in maintaining personal hygiene. Parental parenting plays an important role in the formation of this independent behavior. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between parental parenting and the level of personal hygiene independence  in preschool children at Pertiwi Kindergarten 1, Padang Governor's Office in 2025. This study uses a quantitative method with a cross sectional design. The population in this study is all children in Pertiwi 1 Kindergarten, as many as 93 respondents were taken by total sampling technique. The research instrument was in the form of a questionnaire on parenting and personal hygiene independence. Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate using the Chi-square test. The results of the study showed that  the majority of parents implemented a democratic parenting style (53.8%), and most children were quite independent in personal hygiene (54.8%). The results of the chi-square  statistical test obtained p-volue = 0.000 showed a significant relationship between parental parenting and the level of children's personal hygiene  independence. It was concluded that there was a significant relationship between parental parenting and the level of personal hygiene independence  in preschool children. Democratic parenting tends to increase children's independence, authoritarian parenting can hinder, while permissive parenting provides less consistent results. The importance of implementing a balanced, communicative, and supportive parenting style to encourage independence in maintaining personal hygiene from an early age.
