Abstract

This study aims to formulate standardized criteria for accepting and rejecting scholarly opinions in comparative Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir Muqāran) by critically examining the validity of interpretative arguments. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study analyzes classical and contemporary works on Qur'anic exegesis, uṣūl al-tafsīr, and related Islamic legal methodology using descriptive-analytical and comparative approaches. The findings reveal that the validity of an exegetical opinion should not be determined solely by the authority of the exegete but by objective criteria, including textual consistency with the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, conformity with Arabic linguistic principles, contextual coherence, methodological soundness, and compatibility with the objectives of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah). These criteria provide a systematic framework for evaluating diverse interpretations, minimizing subjectivity, and strengthening the academic rigor of comparative Qur'anic interpretation.
