Abstract

The Teladan Village–Tempel Rejo Subdistrict Road in South Curup District, Rejang Lebong Regency, has experienced a decline in service quality due to increased traffic volume, surface damage, and limitations in the supporting conditions of the road structure. This study aims to evaluate the required thickness of flexible pavement using the 2024 Pavement Design Manual (MDP) method based on traffic characteristics and subgrade bearing capacity. The research method employed an empirical approach through field surveys, collection of Average Daily Traffic (ADT) data, observation of pavement and drainage conditions, and California Bearing Ratio (CBR) testing. Analysis was conducted through vehicle classification, calculation of the Vehicle Damage Factor (VDF), Equivalent Standard Axle Load (ESAL), and Cumulative Equivalent Standard Axle Load (CESAL), and determination of the pavement structure in accordance with MDP 2024. The results of the study showed an average traffic volume of 249 vehicles per day with a subgrade CBR value of 6%. The recommended pavement structure consists of 4 cm of AC-WC, 6.5 cm and 8 cm of AC-BC, 20 cm of Class A aggregate, and 15 cm of Class B aggregate.

Abstract

Sapta Marga Road is an important urban collector road that connects residential areas, government offices, schools, and commercial centers in South Curup Subdistrict, Rejang Lebong Regency. Increasing community activities have resulted in higher traffic demand, particularly during peak hours, potentially affecting roadway operational performance. This study aimed to analyze traffic flow characteristics, roadway capacity, degree of saturation, and Level of Service (LOS), as well as to formulate traffic engineering recommendations for improving traffic operations. An empirical field survey was conducted over three consecutive days during morning, midday, and afternoon peak periods. Primary data included traffic volume, vehicle speed, roadway geometric characteristics, side-friction conditions, and surrounding land-use activities, while the analysis was performed using the 2023 Indonesian Road Capacity Guidelines (PKJI 2023). The results indicate that Sapta Marga Road currently operates at LOS C–D, suggesting that traffic flow remains stable despite increasing operational pressure during peak periods. Moderate to high side friction caused by on-street parking, roadside commercial activities, pedestrian movements, and vehicles entering and exiting adjacent properties was identified as the primary factor reducing operational efficiency and travel speed. The study recommends improving parking management, traffic signs, pavement markings, pedestrian facilities, and road safety infrastructure to enhance roadway performance and support sustainable urban traffic management.
