Abstract

This article analyzes the quality of language usage utilized by writers/translators of bilingual handbooks for Physics, Economics and History that are used in Indonesian Junior High Schools. Ten translation version texts produced by the writers/translators are collected to be the objects of the research to be analysed for their quality of grammatical construction as well as lexical selection. The assessment of three raters are also obtained as the data for the accuracy and the acceptability of the texts, whereas the assessment of the users of the books are collected to verify the readibility of the texts. Although the results still show several weaknesses in grammatical construction and lexical choices, the writers/translators generally produced good quality translations. This is evidenced by the accuracy, acceptability, and readability of the texts that are of high rate. Abstract

Poetry translation is relatively more difficult than any other literary translation, since the translator is expected to be capable of sending the message without diminishing the aesthetic value of the source text. To that end, the translator should have an exceptional mastery of both the source and target languages as well as the ability to employ various translating techniques. For this reason, this research deals with an analysis of the techniques used in translating poems from the anthology “Kidung Saka Bandungan”. The aims of this research are to: (1) provide a description and explanation on poetry translation, especially from Javanese into Indonesian; and (2) provide references to translators about the techniques of translation. This research uses the descriptive-qualitative method. The results show that the translator uses some techniques in translating poems, they are the addition, omission, transposition, modulation, culture equivalence, and borrowing techniques. Key words: poetry, translation, technique in translation.

Abstract

Translation is generally understood as an attempt to transfer messages or meaning of the text (in this case poetry) across from the Source Language to the Target Language, so readers who do not speak of the Source Language can understand the messages conveyed by the author. Translating poetry is relatively more difficult compared to translating other literary works since the translators are expected to be able to transfer the message as well as to maintain it’s aesthetic value. The aesthetic value of the poetry from the Source Language is part of the constructive elements which harmoniously form a beautiful poetry. In this regards, a good translator has to deliver a corresponding message and at the same time keep the aesthetic senses of the poetry for the readers. The attempt to maintain the aesthetic elements of the poetry often results in shifts in form and meaning of the poetry. The object of this research is the Anthology of Poetry of Sundel Bolong Njero Sentong by Rini Tri Puspohardini translated from Javanese to Indonesian language by Sosiawan Leak. The objective of the study is to describe the shifts in form and meaning occurred as the result of the translation of this anthology. The method used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. Keywords: poetry, translation, form shift, meaning shift.
