Abstract

Abinawanto, Effendi PS. 2017. Biodiversity of the Gaga chicken from Pinrang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia based on the bioacoustic analysis and morphometric study. Biodiversitas 18: 1618-1623. Gaga chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus) is the local ornamental chicken originated from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, being kept for the crows. Gaga chicken which also called “ayam ketawa” (“laughing chicken”) has the unique crowing song, which sounds like human laughing. Gaga chicken which has long and fast crowing song is called ‘dangdut’ type, while the short and slow crowing song is named ‘slow’ type. The objective of present study is to investigate the biodiversity of Gaga chicken from Pinrang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia based on morphometric and bioacoustic characters. Twenty samples of Gaga chicken have been collected, consisted of eight ‘slow’ types and twelve ‘dangdut’ types, respectively. Data were analyzed by t-test using SPSS ver. 22. The result showed that ‘slow’ type was bigger than ‘dangdut’ type. Morphometric characters could be applied to determine the biodiversity of Gaga chicken.

Abstract

Abinawanto, Sophian A, Effendi PS, Siswantining T. 2018. Short Communication: Variation in vocal cord morphometric characters among dangdut type and the slow type Gaga Chicken. Biodiversitas 19: 1902-1905. Gaga chicken is one of the ornamental chicken originating from Sidendreng and Rapang (South Sulawesi). Gaga chicken has a unique crowing sound, like people laugh. Gaga’s chicken which has a long and fast crowing sound known as the dangdut type, while those with short and slow crowing sound are known as slow type. Study was conducted in Pinrang (South Sulawesi), where one of the pure strains are located. Samples were collected from Kanie, Bullo, Macege, Rappang, and Sidenreng. The purpose of study was to determine the characteristics of the vocal cord morphometric among the dangdut type and the slow type of Gaga’s chicken. All of the morphometric data were recorded and analyzed by Mean Test, using SPSS (version 22). The results showed that there was no significant difference (a = 0.010) among the dangdut type and the slow type based on syrinx morphometric. Meanwhile, according to the trachea muscle morphometric the results showed that the trachea muscle of dangdut type was longer than the slow type (a < 0.010). In addition, either the right or the left trachea muscle of dangdut type was longer than either the right or the left trachea muscle of the slow type (a < 0.010).

Abstract

Kusumaningrum EN, Supriatna J, Abinawanto, Bowolaksono A. 2018. Short Communication: Ethnozoology – The perception of Tobelo Dalam tribal community in Saolat Village, East Halmahera, Indonesia towards cuscus (Phalangeridae). Biodiversitas 19: 2140-2146. The complexity of the hard lives of Tobelo Dalam tribal community who live in Saolat village, district South Wasile provokes the high activity of animal poaching in Aketajawe-Lolobata National Park (TNAL) including cuscus hunting for both sale and consumption purposes. The study aimed to describe the traditional knowledge of Tobelo Dalam people in Saolat village in applying the systems of utilization and local conservation knowledge towards cuscus. This study was analyzed by the qualitative method with explorative survey technique, interview, and completing questionnaires. This study used 4 key informants (3 males, 1 female) and 50 adult respondents (25 males and 25 females). The results showed that the average percentage of traditional knowledge owned by males and females were 69.1% and 30.9 %, respectively, so the males had an advantage of knowledge around 38.3 % than females in addressing the traditional knowledge of cuscus. The community of Tobelo Dalam tribe hunts cuscus for four different purposes, i.e., for traditional ceremonies, traditional medicine, cuisine, and sell it for more income to support the economy of family.
