Abstract

This study aims to document and preserve the local knowledge of the Singosari community, Malang Regency, East Java in utilizing plants for the Tosan Aji Madakaripura tradition. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this study, where data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. Key informants were determined using a purposive sampling technique, then additional informants were selected using snowball sampling. The data obtained were then analyzed descriptively with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that there were 25 plant species from 19 families dominated by tree habitus with the most widely used part being the trunk for carving and extracting. Plants used in this tradition have different philosophical meanings that reflect the reasons for their use in the tradition. The conservation status of most plants is included in the category of least concern, meaning that their populations are still stable, and there are conservation efforts by the community through cultivation. The implementation of the Tosan Aji Madakaripura tradition demonstrates that various plant species are not only used practically but also possess philosophical meanings that represent the relationship between humans and nature. This finding emphasizes that traditional plant use must be balanced with conservation-based management to maintain the sustainability of biological resources.

Abstract

The use of spices by local communities represents an important aspect of local wisdom, reflecting the relationship between humans and biological resources. This study aims to identify the diversity of spices and analyze their utilization levels as a representation of traditional knowledge in Punten Village, Batu City. This research employed a mixed-methods approach with an exploratory sequential design integrating qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data was obtained through interviews with informants determined using purposive sampling techniques followed by snowball sampling, then observations and documentation were collected as supporting data. Meanwhile, quantitative data were obtained through a questionnaire survey distributed to 95 respondents determined using the Slovin formula with a 10% margin of error. Data were analyzed descriptively for qualitative data and using ethnobotanical indices for quantitative data, including Informant Consensus Factor (ICF), Relative Frequency of Citation (RFC), Species Use Value (SUV), Family Use Value (FUV), Plant Part Use Value (PPUV), and Fidelity Level (FL), to assess the importance and utilization of spices. The results showed 14 spice species belonging to eight families, with Zingiberaceae as the dominant family. The highest ICF value was found in the culinary category (0.98), while the highest RFC (0.96) and SUV (1.68) values were observed in Zingiber officinale. The Zingiberaceae family had the highest FUV value (0.91), and rhizomes were the most utilized plant parts (42.7%). These findings highlight that spice utilization in Punten Village reflects strong traditional knowledge and demonstrates the potential for biodiversity conservation based on local wisdom.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and document the diversity of wild plants used as food sources and analyze quantitative ethnobotanical indices based on local knowledge of the Seloliman Village community, Trawas District, Mojokerto Regency. This study used mixed methods with a sequential exploratory design approach. Qualitative data were obtained from observation, documentation, and interviews with purposive sampling techniques for key informants and snowball sampling for additional informants. Quantitative data were obtained through questionnaires to 89 respondents determined by the Slovin formula. Quantitative data analysis used ethnobotanical indices ICF, RFC, SUV, FUV, FL, and PPUV. The results showed that there were 48 species of wild food plants from 32 families with a dominant Asteraceae family. The ICF value of 0.85–0.96 indicated a high homogeneity of local knowledge among informants. The Yeng-yeng plant (Crassocephalum crepidioides) had the highest RFC value (0.67) and the highest SUV (0.66), making it the most culturally important species. The Asteraceae family had the highest FUV value of 0.87. The most widely utilized plant part was the leaves, with a PPUV of 75.39%. This research demonstrates that wild food plants have cultural value and strategic potential in supporting local food security and the ethnobotanical knowledge of the Seloliman community.
