In the past, the traditional paddy-fish integrative farming (minapadi) was predominantly undertaken by rice farmers in West Java, particularly in the water abundant areas. Currently, however, the practice of the rice-fish system has been dramatically reduced due to the Green Revolution programs, including water pollution that may have affected fish farming in paddy fields. Although the rice-fish systems have rarely been practiced in West Java villages, some farmer groups of Lampegan Village, Ibun Sub-district, Bandung District are still practicing the rice-fish farming system. The purpose of this study is to collect and document the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of Lampegan Village about the rice-fish system farming managements, including data on various fish species that are widely cultivated in the community, cultural practices of the rice-fish farming management, and benefits of the rice-fish farming system. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was used, with an ethnoecological approach. Techniques of data collection, such as observation, semi-structured interviews, or deep interviews, and structured interviews were employed in this study. The results of the study show that the farmers of the rice-fish farming in Lampegan Village, Bandung District own rich and deep knowledge of fish species and practice of the minapadi system. The TEK of the rice-fish farming management system has been inherited from ancestors and is mixed with western scientific knowledge. The rice-fish farming systems have provided some ecological and socio-economic benefits for village people.

Abstract. Iskandar BS, Iskandar J, Partasasmita R, Irawan B. 2020. Various medicinal plants traded in the village market of Karangwangi Village, Southern Cianjur, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4440-4456. In the past traditional village, the market was predominantly found in many villages of West Java. The village markets were usually held once a week. The traders of the village market mainly were from both local villagers or people coming from the nearby towns. Nowadays, the village markets of West Java have dramatically decreased because of the existence of permanent shops (toko) and minimarkets in the rural areas that operate daily. However, in some villages, such as Karangwangi Village, Cidaun Sub-district, Southern Cianjur, West Java, village markets still exist. In the Karangwangi Village market, various plants are commonly traded, such as staple foods, vegetables, fruits, spices, and traditional medicines. The purpose of this study was to discuss the various traditional medicinal plants traded in the village market, some diseases treated by the various herbal plants, various plant parts used for traditional medicines, and original medicinal plants in the village markets of Karangwangi Village. The research method used was qualitative, with data collection carried out by observation, by recording various traditional medicinal plants traded in the village market, and by interviewing informants regarding the use of each medicinal plant species for the treatment of diseases and the origin of plant traded in village markets. The results of the study showed that 35 species representing 23 families of the medicinal plant were documented to be traded in the traditional village markets of Karangwangi Village. These plants are predominantly used to treat 20 kinds of diseases and other disturbance conditions, namely anemia, cough, fever, diabetes, wound, gastritis, malaria, bruised, supplement, toothache, kidney disease, mouth sores, stomachache, high blood pressure, postpartum healing, low back pain, urinary disease, rich breastfeeding produce, dermatitis, and gastroenteritis. Plant parts used for medicinal ingredients in the form of leaf, fruit, bulb, rhizome, root, seed, and shoot. Some medicinal plants have been known to have dual function, such as medicine and vegetables (13 species (36.36%)), medicines and herbs (12 species (34.28 %)), medicines and spices (10 species (28.57 %)), medicines and fruits (8 species (22.85 %)), medicines and staple food (3 species (8.57 %)), medicines, vegetables and spices (1 species (2.85 %)), and medicine and to betel ingredient (1 species (3.03%)). Most of the origin of medicinal plants traded in the village market is from the village with 23 species (65.71%), from cities with 9 species (25.71%), and from both villages and cities with 3 species (8.57 %). On this basis, it can be concluded that the traditional village market has played an important role not only for social-economic interests but also for biodiversity conservation, including biological ingredients for traditional medicines of the rural communities.

Abstract. Mulyanto D, Iskandar J, Madani A, Gunawan R, Partasasmita R. 2020. Folk name and lore of birds from the Sundanese of West Java, Indonesia: An ethno-ornithological survey. Biodiversitas 21: 4384-4395. Since last time, research on birds in West Java had been undertaken by ornithologists. The ethnoornithology research, however, has been rarely employed. The study aims were to account for vernacular or folk names, folk classification, and folkloric birds based on case of the mountain people of Keratasari, West Java, Indonesia. The method in this study was qualitative with the ethnoornithological approach. The field data were collected by focus group discussion and deep interviews with informants of 12 groups of independent village people of four villages of Kertasari sub-district. The naming of collected data was by systematic elicitation of names from pictorial representations of birds and organized here to facilitate analysis of various aspects of folk taxonomy about the scientific one. Folklore about birds that were collected in natural contexts is also included to indicate the birds' role and their names in symbolic processes that exceed the limits of literal reference. The result of the study showed that it was recorded 222 bird species, representing 170 vernacular names, 93 of them were recorded by Koningsberger (1901-1909). The taxonomic and folkloric mode of knowledge in this paper presents that birds play important roles in villagers' lives of Sundanese people, particularly in the study area. Generally, birds have been an important role in socio-cultural aspects, including in folklore of Sundanese people who reside in rural mountain areas of West Java.

Abstract. Asmara IY, Garnida D, Partasasmita R. 2020. Crowing characteristics of Pelung chickens at different age and body weight. Biodiversitas 21: 4339-4344. Crowing characteristics such as duration, frequency, and intensity are important factors to consider in determining a good Pelung. Age and body weight are among other factors being assumed to affect crowing characteristics. The study was conducted to determine the crowing characteristics of different age and body weight. A survey was carried out in Bandung, Cianjur, and Sukabumi Districts, West Java Province, Indonesia in which a total of 98 birds was selected using a purposive technique. The observed parameters were the duration, frequency, and intensity of crowing. The duration was the length of crowing measured by seconds. Frequency is several crowing in a particular time measured by times. Intensity is the magnitude of crowing measured by decibel. The crowing was recorded from 7 AM-2 PM. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and Mann-Whitney U Test to compare data differences between research areas. The study found that the crowing duration of Pelung roosters tends to increase in older birds, but the decrease in heavier birds. Crowing frequency increase along with age and body weight. Crowing intensity is similar in different age groups, while the intensity tends to decrease in the heavier group. The results provide evidence that age and body weight of chickens are an important aspect in Pelung contest and age should be considered as a new category in Pelung contest.
