Abstract

Appendicitis is one of the leading causes of acute abdominal emergencies requiring prompt surgical intervention. The preoperative period frequently induces anxiety due to concerns about surgery, anesthesia, and postoperative outcomes, potentially affecting physiological stability and surgical readiness. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of combined butterfly hug therapy and mindfulness meditation on anxiety levels in preoperative appendicitis patients. An empirical case study was conducted involving one preoperative appendicitis patient at the Central Surgical Installation of Surakarta General Hospital. Data were collected through interviews, observation, medical record documentation, and anxiety assessment using the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) before and after the intervention. The anxiety score decreased from 26 (severe anxiety) to 20 (moderate anxiety), accompanied by improvements in blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and subjective anxiety complaints. These findings suggest that the combination of butterfly hug therapy and mindfulness meditation may serve as a practical nonpharmacological nursing intervention to reduce preoperative anxiety in appendicitis patients.
