Bird diversity and ethno-ornithological knowledge of local people in Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark, Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 3409-3422. Birds have ecological and social functions, and are common to be used as bioindicators of environmental changes. Birds are very important consideration when establishing conservation areas, including geopark which has uniqueness in terms of geological, biological and cultural diversities. This study aimed to investigate the bird diversity in Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark, West Java, Indonesia and as well as to reveal the local knowledge on bird species and folk classification, functions and utilization of birds among the village people. Mixed methods of quantitative and qualitative approaches were applied in this study, while some techniques, including semi-structured interviews, structured interviews, and bird observation on transect and spotlighting were employed to collect the primary data. In total, there were 121 bird species of 47 families of which 88 species were recorded during the field observation and 79 species were documented through the interviews with respondents. Among them, 12 species are listed as having high conservation status under IUCN, 17 species are listed as Appendix II (CITES), and 21 species are listed by Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic Indonesia No. P 106/2018 on Protected Plant and Animal Species. The local community has profound knowledge of birds species, folk classification, ecological, socio-cultural, and socio-economic functions. In the past, the village people had traditional beliefs and myths on birds, resulting in some sacred birds had been traditionally conserved. Nowadays, these are no longer strongly existed, and consequently, many birds have been hunted by using different methods of hunting birds, both traditional and modern for various purposes, including for consumption, bird keeping, and trading to obtain cash. Therefore, bird conservation efforts that involve the community are really needed in this area as the strategy of sustainable management of Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu Geopark.

Biodiversitas 23: 2990-2999. Herpetofauna is very sensitive and can be used as a biodiversity indicator. Herpetofauna can experience environmental stress due to agricultural activities, tourism, and other disturbances that result in habitat loss. Herpetofauna can be found on various land covers, such as natural forests and human-modified land. This study revealed species associated with natural forests, human-modified land, and both. This study aims to investigate: 1) herpetofauna distribution based on land cover types and 2) the disturbance that threatens the herpetofauna habitat in West Java. Visual Encounter Survey combination with the Auditory Encounter Survey, was applied in this study. The result of this study, the species were found in the natural forest (53 species), human-modified land (63 species), and crater (2 species). Thirty-nine species were found both in the natural forest and human-modified land. The habitat disturbance potentially threatens the species, such as land clearing (it will affect the microclimate of land cover), roadkill, infrastructure development, and tourism activities.

Supporting food security through urban home gardening, Rancasari Sub-district, Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 5618-5625. Urban areas are closely related to the increase in human population, which triggers increased demand for land for settlements or housing. The increase in human population is in line with the increase in daily food requirements. As agricultural land decreases, agricultural productivity decreases, but much agricultural land has been converted into non-agricultural land, leading to food insecurity. Urban farming through home gardening is one of the methods to maintain food security amidst limited open land. This study aimed to reveal urban farming as a role model for food security through home gardens in the Rancasari Sub-district, Bandung City, West Java, Indonesia. This study used a quantitative approach. Data were collected using purposive sampling in housing >20 years old in Manjahlega and Mekarjaya Village. Plants are divided based on their utilization, including ornamental, spice, medicine, and food plants. The results showed that 803 species and 20,366 individuals of 130 families were found in Manjahlega Village, while 680 species and 10,862 individuals were found in the Mekarjaya Village. In Manjahlega, mango (Mangifera indica L.) has the highest IVI value of 64.58, while in Mekarjaya, Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum Schott.) has the highest IVI value of 10.2. Based on their use, ornamental plants have the highest H and R values compared to food, medicines, and spice plants. Ornamental plants dominate home gardens in Rancasari Sub-district. Their home gardens tend to be aimed at providing aesthetic value and beauty rather than producing food, medicines, and spices in the household. Home gardening has not been fully effective in supporting urban farming in Rancasari Sub-district due to the selection of ornamental plants.

The protection effort of leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis Kerr, 1792) in the Upper Cisokan Pumped Storage, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 169-176. Humans develop various infrastructures to meet electricity needs so that it is to improve human welfare besides the increasing population. Hydropower development cannot be separated from land clearing, which damages and eliminates the habitats of wild animals, including leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis Kerr, 1792). Humans also cleared land as agricultural land to fulfill their needs. Fulfilling the needs of electricity and agriculture is necessary to improve human welfare. Besides, leopard cats need a suitable habitat to meet their needs. Therefore, protection effort is required to fulfill leopard cats' and humans' needs. The study aims to reveal the protection efforts in the Upper Cisokan Pumped Storage, West Java, Indonesia. A qualitative approach was applied through literature reviews. The protection effort of leopard cats was conducted through stakeholder participation in the UCPS area. As the initiator, Indonesia Hydropower Company (PT. PLN) involves various stakeholders related to the construction of the UCPS hydropower plant, including Perum Perhutani, contractors, and the local people. Indonesia Hydropower Company (PT. PLN) protects leopard cats by managing the impacts produced by the UCPS hydropower plant and biodiversity.
