Biodiversitas 24: 6447-6453. The coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei Ferrari (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is an essential pest of coffee plants that can cause loss and decrease in the quality of coffee berries. Parasitoids were expected to affect the presence of coffee berry borer in the ecosystem as one of its natural enemies. This study aimed to identify and describe the parasitoid of CBB in Bogor District, West Java, Indonesia. The study was conducted from June 2022 to January 2023 on three coffee cultivation located in three sub-districts in Bogor District, i.e., Cijeruk, Dramaga, and Sukamakmur. This study collected attacked coffee berries by CBB from coffee cultivation that kept the coffee berry until the parasitoids emerged and the parasitoids were identified; the morphological characters and descriptions of parasitoids CBB were presented. Ten species of Hymenopteran parasitoids belonging to five families were found. These parasitoids were Microgastrinae, Mendesellinae (Braconidae), Trissolcus sp. (Scelionidae), Anagyrus sp., Marxella sp., Procheiloneurus sp., Pararhopella sp., Parablastothrix sp. (Encyrtidae), Pronotalia sp. (Eulophidae), and Pteromalus sp. (Pteromalidae). The parasitoids of CBB in Bogor District were quite diverse, but their abundance was low.

Abstract. Sinaga RR, Maryana N, Hidayat P. 2024. Diversity and foraging activity of coffee insect pollinators in land near and far from the forest of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 240-248. Coffee (Coffea spp.) is among the plant species that depend on insects to aid in its pollination process, where insect pollinators serve as intermediaries facilitating plant pollination. This study examined the diversity, abundance, and visiting activity of insect pollinators in coffee cultivation located in different areas, specifically those near the forest and those far from the forest in Simalungun District, North Sumatra. The study was carried out from September 2022 to February 2023 in six coffee cultivation sites spread across four sub-districts in Simalungun District, i.e., Silimakuta, Pematang Silimakuta, Purba, and Dolok Silau. The study's results revealed the presence of 16 species of insect pollinators in coffee cultivation near the forest and 13 species in those located far from the forest. The identified insect pollinators species were from Order Hymenoptera; Apis cerana, Lasioglossum sp., Dolichovespula norvegicoides, Diptera; Stomorhina discolor, Musca domestica, Bactrocera papayae, Nephrotoma flavescens, Episyrphus viridaureus, Oebalia sp., Coleoptera; Pachnaeus sp., Cantharis sp., Scarabaeidae sp 1., Maladera japonica, Lepidoptera; Agrotis segetum, Bradina diagonalis, and Nyctemera baulus. Notably, the abundance of coffee insect pollinators was more pronounced in close proximity to the forest compared to areas far from the forest. Regarding the visiting duration of these insects, S. discolor exhibited the longest visit duration of 76.46±1.19 seconds per flower, and the shortest duration in A. cerana was recorded at 8.35±0.23 seconds per flower.

Leaf beetle Phyllotreta striolata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): Biology and infestation on Chinese flowering cabbage Brassica rapa var. parachinensis in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 3099-3105. Chinese flowering cabbage (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis L.) holds significant economic value and provides essential nutrition. Bogor District, a primary region for vegetable production in Indonesia, faces a severe issue due to the leaf beetle Phyllotreta striolata Fabricius 1803 infestation on Chinese flowering cabbage plants. However, research on this pest in Indonesia is still limited. Observations on the biological aspects of P. striolata involved collecting and identifying adult P. striolata from Chinese flowering cabbage fields, along with biological observations focusing on the beetle's morphology and developmental stages. Population calculations of adult beetles and evaluation of P. striolata infestation intensity on Chinese flowering cabbage plants were conducted in four sub-districts in Bogor District. The average life cycle of this beetle was 27.15 days. The study revealed that the adult stage lasted an average of 119.10 days, with an average preoviposition period of 3.08 days. Adult populations tended to decrease with the age of Chinese flowering cabbage plants due to environmental factors and food source availability. Infestation intensity varied across locations, with Leuwimalang showing the lowest intensity (23.56%) and Laladon the highest (48.76%). These differences suggest that the environment in Leuwimalang may support the resistance of Chinese flowering cabbage plants to leaf pest attacks.

Mealybugs (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on ornamental plants in West Java, Indonesia with a new country species record, and their natural enemies. Biodiversitas 26: 1018-1029. Part of Indonesia's biodiversity in ornamental plants has been developed for the global market. However, one of the constraints in meeting market demand is the presence of mealybug pests, which can reduce plant beauty, vigor, and economic value of plants. This study identifies mealybug species associated with ornamental plants in Indonesia and their natural enemies based on morphological characteristics. The research found 15 mealybug species, 14 of which had been previously recorded in West Java, Indonesia, namely Dysmicoccus brevipes, D. neobrevipes, Exallomochlus hispidus, Ferrisia virgata, Maconellicoccus hirsutus, Nipaecoccus nipae, Paracoccus marginatus, Phenacoccus solenopsis, Planococcus lilacinus, Pl. minor, Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi, Ps. longispinus, Rastrococcus iceryoides and R. spinosus. The fifteenth species, Spilococcus mamillariae, found on cacti, is a new record for Indonesia and Southeast Asia. This study also documented various natural enemies, including both predators and parasitoids. Seven predator species were identified, six of which belonged to Coleoptera: Coccinellidae, namely Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, Curinus coeruleus, Illeis sp., Nephus sp., Cheilomenes sexmaculata, and Scymnus sp.; and one species of Neuroptera: Chrysopidae: Plesiochrysa ramburi. Hymenopteran parasitoids were found belonging to two families: Encyrtidae (Anagyrus pseudococci, A. mirzai, Blepyrus insuliaris and Gyranusoidea tebygi; and Eulophidae (Aprostocetus sp.). Furthermore, Hymenopteran hyperparasitoids belonging to the families Aphelinidae (Promuscidea unfaciativentris) and Encyrtidae (Prochiloneurus sp. and Prochiloneurus nagasakiensis) were also recorded

Abstract

Abstract. Amanina S, Maryana N, Winasa IW. 2025. Refugia flowers enhance insect pollinator and quality of fruit production in strawberry farming. Biodiversitas 26: 1310-1316. Strawberry flowers have different receptive and anthesis periods, making them generally cross-pollinated. Adding refugia flowers in strawberry farming can attract more insect pollinators, enhancing successful cross-pollination and complete fruit formation. This research aimed to study the effect of refugia flowers in improving the diversity and abundance of insect pollinators and, eventually, fruit production and quality in strawberry farming. The research was conducted in Sukaresmi Village, Rancabali Sub-district, Bandung District, West Java, Indonesia using a randomized group experimental design consisted of four treatments, namely strawberries plants without refugia (control/C), strawberries and common zinnia (Zinnia elegans) (SZ), strawberries and marigold flowers (Tagetes sp.) (SM) and strawberries and cosmos flowers (Cosmos sp.) (SC). Observations of pollinators were conducted at 06.00-09.00, 10.00-13.00, and 14.00-17.00 every three days for 30 days. Data was subjected to analysis of diversity and abundance, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Chi-Square test, and correlation analysis. The highest pollinator diversity was found in the SC treatment, and the lowest was in the control, although the diversity level in all treatments was moderate. The cosmos flowers also attracted the most significant number of individual pollinators. Three dominant pollinators were found in all plots, i.e. Apis cerana, Melanostoma sp., and Episyrphus viridaureus. Furthermore, the abundance of pollinators affected the quantity of perfect fruit and quality of strawberry fruits, with SC treatment producing the highest fruit yield and quality on average. The findings of this study imply that adding cosmos flowers positively impacts pollinators, which helps produce better strawberries.
