Abstract

Waste management is a major environmental challenge in Indonesia, including in Semarang City, where public awareness of household waste sorting remains low. Children in orphanages are among the groups vulnerable to lack of access to environmental education. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of waste sorting based on a three-color bin system (green: organic, yellow: inorganic, red: residue/B3) among children at the Futuhatul Ilahiyyah Social Orphanage Foundation, Semarang. The method used was a participatory approach through interactive lectures, tool demonstrations, and hands-on practice. There were 6 participants aged 7–12 years. The results showed that 5 out of 6 participants (83.33%) succeeded in sorting waste correctly. The children also demonstrated increased knowledge, high enthusiasm, and the ability to ask critical questions regarding waste processing. In conclusion, waste sorting education based on the three-color bin system effectively increases awareness and skills among orphanage children. Similar activities need to be carried out periodically to establish conservation agents from an early age.
