Abstract

This article advances a Sufi-informed reinterpretation of disaster in Islamic thought, challenging dominant fatalistic narratives that frame crises as mere expressions of divine decree. While concepts such as balā’ (trial) and qaḍā’ wa qadar (predestination) have traditionally provided theological meaning, their reduction into passive fatalism risks undermining human agency, ethical responsibility, and transformative action. Drawing on the intellectual traditions of Al-Ghazali and Ibn Arabi, this study develops a qualitative-philosophical framework grounded in hermeneutic and critical textual analysis. The article argues that Sufism offers an alternative epistemology in which disaster is understood not as punishment but as a site of ethical-spiritual transformation (kashf), where inner awareness and moral responsibility are cultivated. This reinterpretation is further extended into Islamic legal theory through a reconfiguration of maqāṣid al-sharī‘a, shifting its orientation from preservation toward human transformation. In parallel, the study proposes a pedagogical shift in Islamic education from teaching about disaster to teaching through disaster, emphasizing spiritual resilience, reflective learning, and ethical engagement.
