Abstract

Limited forage availability and the high cost of feed are major constraints in smallholder sheep farming. Corn stover, as a local agricultural by-product, has the potential to be utilized as silage to improve livestock farming efficiency. This study aimed to analyze the effect of corn stover silage on growth performance and the economic feasibility of sheep farming in Sukabumi Regency. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of production performance analysis and economic feasibility evaluation of corn stover silage utilization in smallholder farming systems. The study was conducted in 2026 using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two treatments, namely P0 (forage) and P1 (corn stover silage), each consisting of 8 local male sheep maintained for 90 days. The parameters observed included average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and economicevaluation based on R/C and B/C ratios. The results showed that the administration of corn stover silage significantly affected (P<0.05) the growth performance of sheep. Treatment P1 produced an ADG of 95 g/head/day, which was higher than P0 at 65 g/head/day, and also resulted in a more efficient FCR of 16.80 compared to 22.30. Economic analysis indicated an R/C ratio of 1.16 and a B/C ratio of 0.16 for treatment P1. It can be concluded that corn stover silage has the potential to improve growth performance and economic efficiency in smallholder sheep farming.
