Abstract

Tea is one of the oldest beverages known to humanity, with green tea being among the most popular types due to its distinctive flavor and health benefits. The development of green tea is essential, both in terms of sensory quality and functional value. This study aimed to screen 35 Indonesian Sinensis tea clones to identify those with superior flavor, compliance with Indonesian National Standards (SNI), high protein content, and low caffeine levels. The research was conducted by processing fresh tea shoots into green tea, followed by quality evaluation based on SNI parameters, including moisture content, total ash content, crude fiber content, and polyphenol content, as well as analysis of protein and caffeine levels. The experiment employed a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two replications and 35 clones as treatments. The results revealed significant variation in quality among the tested clones. Clone I.2.85 and II.2.108 was identified as the best-performing clone, meeting SNI quality standards (moisture content, total ash, crude fiber, and polyphenols), exhibiting high protein levels, low caffeine levels, and a premium flavor profile.

Abstract

Tea (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) is a vital commodity in Indonesia as a raw material for the beverage industry, making early-stage clone screening essential. This study aimed to investigate the stability of growth components and characterize the morphological phenotypic performance of selected tea clones during the vegetative phase. Conducted at the Malabar (West Java) and Semugih (Central Java) plantations from December 2025 to April 2026, the experiment utilized a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 16 treatments (15 candidate clones and one check clone, GMB 7) in three replications. Data were analysed using combined ANOVA, Tukey's HSD test (α=5%), and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Results revealed significant genotype-by-environment (GxE) interactions for plant height and stem diameter at 3 months after planting (MAP), with variations predominantly driven by environmental factors. Clone II.13.2 was significantly shorter than GMB 7 at 3 MAP, while the stem diameters of clones TPS 93/3, TPS 87/2, II.32.15, TPS 87/1, II.6.10, and III.22.15 showed no significant difference compared to the check. Dendrogram analysis placed GMB 7 in a distinct cluster, indicating the candidate clones possess unique vegetative characteristics. Vegetative phase useful for early selection and these potential clones warrant further evaluation for future variety release.

Abstract

This study investigated the morphological diversity and population structure of 16 Sinensis tea clones (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze var. sinensis) during the nursery phase to support superior variety development. The research was conducted at the Gambung Tea and Kina Research Center, West Java, using morphological and growth trait analysis. Data were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis. The results revealed significant morphological variation among the clones, particularly in leaf number, shoot color, and leaf blade morphology. PCA indicated that 88% of the phenotypic variation was explained by five principal components, with the number of leaves and second leaf color at the p+2 position identified as the most influential traits for clonal differentiation. Cluster analysis classified the 16 clones into two distinct kinship groups, with the second group comprising 81.25% of the tested population. These findings provide essential insights into the genetic and morphological landscape of Sinensis tea clones, establishing a robust framework for parent selection and future breeding programs aimed at producing high-quality varieties for the international green tea market.
