Abstract

Islam has been present in Indonesia to bring change to a better direction. Islam is not directly accepted by the people of Indonesia. As a step of the initiative of Islamic missionaries in Indonesia, it uses an approach that deals with matters that are inherent in the everyday life of Indonesian society. One of the most effective approaches to spreading Islam is through culture. Indeed, what has been done by Indonesian Islamic preachers reflects the spirit of dakwah, which is recommended by Allah in his word (Q.S. al-Nahl: 125). As a contextualized form of the Rasulullah dakwah method, Islamic preachers in Indonesia have presented Islam really in its context as a religion, not as an Arabic cultural product, as it has recently been misunderstood by some. Through socio-historical-contextual approaches with linguistic analysis based on the interpretation of the scholar's linguistic and social use theory and the use of gratification theory introduced by Herbert Blumer and Elihu Katz, this paper will reveal the values and messages of practice preaching the Prophet to Arab society in his time linked to the practice of dakwah Ulama Indonesia so as to make people aware of the importance of culture in building a civil life, which through culture. Keywords: Dakwah, al-Nahl: 125, Civic Society

Abstract

The flexibility in using digital media as a result of the incessant era of globalization is a phenomenon which cannot be avoided at this time. This phenomenon also has implications for the realm of religion where there are many al-Qur’an and translation applications that are called new mushaf. The existence of this new mushaf, also has an impact on the formation of a new Muslim generation which by Muhammad Sahal Sobirin is called Digital Literate Muslims Generation, a generation of Muslims who depend on the use of al-Qur’an and translation applications. In order to respond to this phenomenon, this article was prepared by emphasizing aspects of i’jazal-Qur’an based on the theory of la taradufa fi al-Qur’an in Aisyah Abdur Rahman bintu Syathi’s perspective, as an affirmation of the complexity of the divine message of al-Qur’an that cannot be achieved only by understanding translation.

Abstract

Abstract

Islam coming to Indonesia is not coming to an empty land, but its people have built up on a strong tradition and culture. As an initiative step, the preachers used the dialectical approach of culture. Nusantara Islam is a religious expression that is in accordance with the local culture of the archipelago, because there is a dialectic between religious texts and local Nusantara culture and traditions. However, Nusantara Islam has been misunderstood by the notion of radicalism, this group does not accept acculturation of culture in religion. So that the negative view of the Nusantara Islam in it accommodates local cultural rituals. So this paper aims to discuss how the dialectics of culture and religion in the context of the spread of Islam as exemplified at the time of the Prophet and in the time of Walisongo. To support the course of this study researchers used a historical analysis approach. As a result of the analysis the researchers found that cultural and religious dialectics had taken place at the time of the Prophet. in the face of the traditions of the people of Mecca, the Prophet did not reject and erase all their long-standing practices. so that what was done by Indonesian preachers is not contradictory in Islam. Thus, this paper is expected to be able to answer the negative responses of puritans who want to purge Islam from all forms of cultural acculturation in it and be able to affirm Nusantara Islam as a characteristic of Indonesian Islam free of radicalism and respect for plurarity.

Abstract

The discourse on decolonizing Qur’ān and tafsīr studies has gained increasing attention following Joseph E. Lumbard’s critique of the dominance of Eurocentric epistemologies in Islamic studies. While this debate has stimulated critical reflection within Western scholarship, its reception and development in Indonesian Qur’ānic studies remain underexamined. This article investigates how the discourse has evolved in Indonesian Islamic universities by focusing on the reception of Western scholarship, the predominance of contextual interpretation, and the position of tafsīr Nusantara within contemporary Qur’ānic studies. This study employs qualitative library research using critical discourse analysis. Drawing on scholarship on decolonization, Western Qur’ānic studies, Indonesian Islamic higher education, and tafsīr Nusantara, it critically evaluates the conceptual assumptions underlying the Indonesian discourse rather than measuring institutional trends. The study finds that the decolonization of Qur’ānic and tafsīr studies in Indonesia remains largely a static discourse. Although Western scholarship has been widely incorporated into academic institutions, it has primarily reinforced the dominance of contextual hermeneutics while leaving the classical Islamic exegetical tradition and tafsīr Nusantara insufficiently integrated as autonomous epistemic resources. The article argues that meaningful decolonization requires not the rejection of Western scholarship but the reconstruction of a genuinely pluralistic epistemology that recognizes classical Islamic scholarship and tafsīr Nusantara as active intellectual traditions. In doing so, it offers a critical framework for advancing decolonization in Indonesian Qur’ānic and tafsīr studies.
