Abstract

Faith in God and its impact on productivity has become an important social question. This study aims to examine the correlation between attachment to God and achievement motivation among students at Petra Christian Senior High School 2 Surabaya. The method utilized was a quantitative correlational approach. The attachment to God questionnaire referred to the Brazilian Validation of the Attachment to God Inventory (IAD-Br) by August et al. (2018), which consists of two dimensions: (1) avoidance of intimacy; and (2) anxiety about abandonment. Meanwhile, the achievement motivation questionnaire was developed by the authors based on McClelland’s dimensions (Amir, 2016; Man et al., 1994), which include: (1) motivation to achieve success; and (2) motivation to avoid failure. The study population consisted of 207 12th-grade science students, and based on sample size calculation using Raosoft, a minimum sample of 135 students was required. The sampling technique employed was random sampling, resulting in a total of 135 study participants. Data analysis was conducted using the Product Moment correlation and the Chi-Square (χ²) test through cross-tabulation between categories of attachment to God (High, Medium, Low) and achievement motivation (High, Medium, Low). The results showed a significant relationship between attachment to God and achievement motivation, with a correlation value of r = .517 (p < .05). The Chi-Square test yielded χ² = 168.82 (p < .05), confirming that the relationship between the two variables was also significant at the categorical level. Thus, the study hypothesis stating that there is a correlation between attachment to God and students’ achievement motivation is supported. The findings of this study are expected to provide insights for the school in developing learning strategies that enhance achievement motivation through strengthening students’ spirituality.
