Abstract

This study is entitled "Tasse Habak Greeting System" in the Foho Tribe, Botin Leobele District, Malaka Regency. This study aims to describe the greeting system and analyze the forms of greetings used in the guest welcoming tradition (Tasse Habak), especially for religious guests. This study uses a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods and is analyzed using Dell Hymes' SPEAKING theory. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation involving two informants who are native speakers of the Dawan R language. The results of the study indicate that the Tasse Habak greeting system is a form of traditional communication that is formal, sacred, and full of meaning, which reflects the values of respect, social relations, and spiritual relations between humans and God, ancestors, and each other. The forms of greetings used include greetings to religious guests, ancestors, and the community which are delivered verbally with a distinctive language style in the form of replies, the use of symbolic diction, and a speech structure consisting of an opening, content, and closing. The use of this greeting is influenced by factors of social status, situational context, and customary norms that apply in society. Thus, the Tasse Habak greeting system serves not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for preserving the culture and identity of the F oho ethnic group.

Abstract

This study aims to describe phrase structures, phrase functions, and cultural meanings contained in the lyrics of traditional Penti songs of the Manggarai community. Traditional Penti songs are part of Manggarai oral tradition used during thanksgiving ceremonies for harvests and as a medium for honoring God and ancestors. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using syntactic and ethnolinguistic theories. The data consisted of Penti song lyrics collected through observation, interviews, and documentation in Piso and Lemarang Villages, West Reok District, Manggarai Regency. Data were analyzed through identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal three phrase types: nominal phrases, verbal phrases, and prepositional phrases. Nominal phrases consist of N+N, N+Adj, and Numeral+N patterns. Verbal phrases consist of V+Object, V+Adverbial, and V+Complement patterns. Prepositional phrases consist of Preposition+Noun patterns. Beyond their syntactic functions, these phrases contain cultural meanings related to gratitude, respect for ancestors, hopes for prosperity, and harmonious relationships among humans, nature, and God. Verbal phrases are the most dominant because they are widely used to express prayers, praise, and requests within Manggarai society.
