Abstract

This study addresses the low level of critical thinking skills among third-grade elementary school students, which is influenced by the limited use of innovative learning models in classroom practices. The purpose of this research is to examine the effectiveness of the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model in improving students’ critical thinking skills. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The participants were third-grade students of SD N 122350 Pematang Siantar. Data were collected through critical thinking tests administered before and after the implementation of the PjBL model. The data were analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, paired sample t-test, and regression analysis. The findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ critical thinking skills, as indicated by higher posttest scores compared to pretest results. Statistical analysis also confirmed that the implementation of Project Based Learning had a positive and significant effect on students’ critical thinking abilities. Therefore, it can be concluded that the PjBL model is effective in enhancing critical thinking skills in elementary school students and can be recommended as an alternative learning strategy in primary education.
