Abstract

This study is motivated by the economic condition of Catholic families that influence the process of children’s character formation within family life. Economic pressures often reduce parent’s attention to the moral and faith education of their children, thereby affecting the development of children’s character. This research aims to examine the influence of the Catholic families on children’s character formation and to reflect upon this phenomenon in the light of Gaaudium et Spes. The study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive-reflective approach. The research was conducted among several Catholic families within a parish environment representing diverse economic backgrounds. The research participants consisted of parents and children from Catholic families. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that family economic conditions significantly influence children’s character formation, particularly in the aspects of discipline, responsibility, and emotional development. Nevertheless, religious life, effective communication, and parental role modelling remain essential factors that support children’s character formation despite economic limitations. A reflection of Gaudium et Spes reveals that the family continues to be called to serve as a primary place for the education of love, faith, and moral values for children.
