Abstract

Consumptive habits among beneficiaries of the Kartu Indonesia Pintar Kuliah (KIP-Kuliah) scholarship have become an increasing issue as the provided funds are meant to assist with students’ academic requirements. This research seeks to detect forms of these consumptive behaviors, analyze the determinants that affect them, and evaluate the consequences on the allocation of educational funds. A qualitative descriptive methodology was used, involving semi-structured interviews conducted with 11 KIP-Kuliah scholars from the Digital Business Study Program at Universitas Negeri Medan. The results indicate that a significant number of participants allocated portions of their funds to non-educational activities, including leisure activities, clothing purchases, and personal care items. Factors such as peer influence, exposure to social media, inadequate financial literacy, and insufficient self-discipline played a role in this behavior. Consequently, students faced financial challenges, unmet educational needs, and mental stress. This research underscores the necessity for financial literacy education and support initiatives.
