Abstract

Speaking skills among elementary school students remain an inadequatelyresolved challenge in Indonesian language learning. Low self-confidence, limitedaccess to authentic communicative practice, and the dominance of passiveinstructional approaches are identified as primary inhibiting factors. This studyaims to analyze and synthesize empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the roleplaying method in improving elementary school students' speaking skills through asystematic literature review. A qualitative approach with a literature review designfollowing the PRISMA guidelines was employed. From 678 articles identifiedacross Google Scholar, Portal Garuda, ERIC, and DOAJ, 38 final articles met theinclusion criteria and formed the basis of analysis. Findings indicate that the roleplaying method is consistently effective in improving speaking skills through threemechanisms: the creation of a safe psychological space for expression, theactivation of linguistic competence within authentic communicative contexts, andthe stimulation of active engagement driven by intrinsic motivation. Thiseffectiveness is moderated by the quality of scenario design, integration ofsupporting media, and the teacher's facilitation competence. These findings implythe necessity of internalizing the role playing method as a core instructionalstrategy for speaking skills development in elementary education, rather thantreating it as a supplementary
