Abstract

This study aims to analyze the socialization and internalization process of beauty standards among college students and how it shapes body shaming practices, as well as to identify students' resilience strategies in facing these social pressures. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), Universitas Nusa Cendana Kupang, data were gathered through deep interviews and observation with eight informants selected via purposive sampling. The framework relies on Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's Social Construction of Reality theory. The results indicate that the internalization of beauty standards occurs through three distinct phases: introduction, acceptance, and deep internalization, heavily reinforced by digital media saturation (TikTok and Instagram) and peer interactions. Body shaming emerges as a direct symbolic reproduction when individuals deviate from these rigid standards, manifesting as physical mockery, verbal labeling, and cyberbullying. Consequently, victims suffer severe selfconfidence degradation and body dissatisfaction. However, students actively exercise agency through diverse resilience mechanisms, including radical self-acceptance, critical reduction of social media consumption, surrounding themselves with supportive environments, and shifting metrics of self-worth toward functional self-improvement.
