Abstract

The press acts as a liaison between the public and the government through mass media. In a democratic society, freedom of expression and the right to information must be guaranteed, as both are fundamental human rights. However, the implementation of press freedom in the reform era still faces various challenges. Compared to the New Order era, which was highly personal, powerful, and politically dominant, the post-New Order era brought significant changes to the press in Indonesia, including in Banjarmasin. This study aims to explore the contribution of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) and the influence of press freedom on PWI, which serves as a national unifying organization for journalists, providing significant benefits in the post-1998 press revival and the influence of press freedom on PWI's performance in Banjarmasin. This study uses a library research method with a historiographic approach to analyze various written sources regarding the contribution of the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) to the revival of the press and the influence of press freedom on PWI in Banjarmasin from 1998 to 2007. The research results show that the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) contributed to the revival of the press in Banjarmasin City after the 1998 Reformation. PWI helped improve the quality of journalists and supported press freedom. Press freedom also enabled PWI to achieve better results in press development in Banjarmasin City between 1998 and 2007.
