Abstract

The Malam 1 Suro Procession is one of the cultural heritages of the Surakarta Hadiningrat Palace that has been preserved until today. The tradition serves not only as a commemoration of the Javanese New Year but also as a medium for preserving cultural, historical, and spiritual values within Javanese society. The presence of Kebo Bule Kyai Slamet, regarded as a living royal heirloom, has become the main attraction and has given rise to the phenomenon of ngalap berkah (seeking blessings). However, this practice has generated various public responses, particularly in the digital era where information spreads rapidly through social media. This study aims to analyze the cultural meaning of Kebo Bule Kyai Slamet, the phenomenon of ngalap berkah, and the challenges of preserving this tradition in modern society. The research employed a qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data were collected from academic publications, articles, and documents related to the Malam 1 Suro Procession. The findings reveal that Kebo Bule Kyai Slamet symbolizes cultural identity and respect for ancestral heritage. Nevertheless, the development of digital media has contributed to differing public perceptions of the tradition. Therefore, cultural preservation efforts should be accompanied by cultural education and literacy programs to ensure that the values embedded in the tradition remain relevant and understood by contemporary generations.
