Abstract

Language is often viewed merely as a sign system or functional communication tool, but a far more crucial issue is its position as a direct expression of human consciousness. This study aims to explore the English learning experiences of 9th-grade students at MTsS Ibrahim Uluale and examine how language shapes their consciousness through a phenomenological lens. Using a pedagogical phenomenological approach, data were collected through participatory methods including in-depth interviews, reflective journaling, and Think-Aloud Protocols with informants selected via purposive sampling. The results reveal three crucial main themes: (1) early emotional dynamics shifting from linguistic alienation to a sense of language ownership, (2) English as a space for identity negotiation where students find a new "voice" in their consciousness, and (3) the achievement of intentionality fulfillment marked by pride when aligning thoughts with precise verbal expressions. This study concludes that English is understood not just as a school subject or a sign system, but as a medium for expanding human consciousness, enabling students to represent themselves more courageously and authentically in a global world.
