Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Paulo Freire’s humanistic education concept among fourth-semester students of the Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Teacher Education Program (PGMI) at Universitas Sains Al-Qur’an (UNSIQ). The research was motivated by the learning process in higher education which is still often dominated by conventional methods and lacks opportunities for students to think critically and participate actively. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving four respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the learning process had reflected the implementation of Paulo Freire’s humanistic education through two-way communication, discussion activities, presentations, and active student participation in learning. Students were given opportunities to express opinions, ask questions, and relate learning materials to everyday life. The implementation of this approach contributed to increasing students’ confidence, courage, and critical awareness. However, several obstacles were still found, such as limited student participation and time constraints during the learning process. Therefore, more effective learning strategies are needed to optimize dialogical and humanistic learning in higher education.
