Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology and social media has led to the emergence of the Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) phenomenon, particularly among adolescents. FOMO is a psychological condition characterized by feelings of anxiety or fear of missing information, experiences, or activities enjoyed by others. This study aims to understand the concept of FOMO, identify its contributing factors, and analyze its impact on adolescent social development. The research employs a qualitative approach using a library research method through the collection and analysis of relevant literature sources. The findings indicate that FOMO among adolescents is influenced by intensive social media use, the need for social acceptance, social comparison tendencies, low self-confidence, and peer influence. This phenomenon affects adolescents' social development by reducing the quality of direct social interactions, increasing social anxiety, fostering feelings of inferiority, creating dependence on social validation, and strengthening peer pressure. FOMO may also contribute positively by encouraging social participation and expanding friendship networks. Therefore, efforts such as improving digital literacy, strengthening self-confidence, limiting social media use, and providing support from families and schools are essential to minimize the negative effects of FOMO on adolescent social development.
