Abstract

This article examines the Abbasid Dynasty as an intersection between political revolution and the advancement of Islamic educational civilization. The study is motivated by the tendency of Islamic historical studies to separate political dynamics from educational development, although both were closely connected in shaping classical Islamic civilization. This research employs library research with a historical-analytical approach. Data were collected from books, journal articles, and relevant scholarly literature, then analyzed descriptively and critically through content analysis. The findings show that the Abbasid revolution did not merely mark a transfer of power from the Umayyad Dynasty but also introduced a more cosmopolitan political orientation that supported intellectual development. The caliphs’ patronage of Bayt al-Hikmah, translation movements, madrasahs, libraries, and scholarly assemblies became a crucial factor in the advancement of Islamic education. However, the relationship between politics and education during the Abbasid period was also ambivalent, as state patronage could strengthen knowledge while simultaneously opening space for ideological intervention. This article concludes that the Abbasid intellectual tradition remains relevant to modern Islamic education, particularly in the integration of religious and scientific knowledge, the strengthening of literacy, research culture, educational institutions, and academic freedom.
