Abstract

Natural disasters pose serious threats to communities and have long-term consequences across multiple dimensions of life, including quality of life. Tropical Cyclone Seroja, which struck the city of Kupang in April 2021, was one of the largest hydrometeorological disasters ever recorded in East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT), causing widespread infrastructure damage, socioeconomic disruption, and significant psychological impacts on affected populations. This study aims to analyze the relationship between disaster preparedness levels and the quality of life of communities affected by Cyclone Seroja in Kupang. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, based on literature review and secondary data analysis. The findings indicate a significant relationship between disaster preparedness and community quality of life. Individuals with higher levels of mitigation knowledge tended to exhibit lower anxiety and faster recovery. Conversely, low preparedness — such as the absence of a disaster preparedness kit — contributed to increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which negatively affected quality of life across physical, psychological, economic, and social dimensions. This study concludes that disaster preparedness is not merely a set of pre-disaster technical actions, but rather an essential foundation for sustaining overall community well-being in the aftermath of disasters.
