Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools requires contextual learning resources to help students understand scientific concepts in meaningful ways. Dishwashing liquid is a potential learning resource because it is widely available, safe to use, and closely related to students' daily lives. This study aims to analyze the potential of dishwashing liquid as a contextual learning resource for elementary science education through the Science-Technology-Society (STS) approach. This study employed a literature review method by examining relevant scientific articles, books, and supporting documents related to science concepts, dishwashing liquid formulation, contextual learning, and the STS approach. The findings indicate that dishwashing liquid can be used to introduce various science concepts, including the properties of matter, mixtures and solutions, acids and bases, surfactants, emulsification, and surface tension. In addition, a simple dishwashing liquid formulation enables safe and practical experimental activities suitable for elementary school students. Integrating learning activities with the STS approach helps connect scientific concepts with technology and societal issues, thereby fostering scientific literacy, science process skills, critical thinking, scientific communication, and environmental awareness. Although its implementation may face challenges related to school facilities and teachers' readiness, dishwashing liquid has strong potential as an innovative, contextual, and relevant learning resource to support twenty-first-century science education in elementary schools.
