Abstract

This study was motivated by students’ limited understanding of Pontianak’s local culture at SDN 15 Pontianak Selatan. These poor learning outcomes were caused by a teaching approach that remains dominated by verbal instruction and is still teacher-centered. This study aims to improve third-grade elementary school students’ understanding of local culture through the implementation of a Pontianak cultural map project based on Project-Based Learning. The method used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on the model developed by Kemmis and MC. Tagart. The study was conducted in two cycles with 22 students as research subjects. Data collection techniques included observation and achievement tests. The results showed that the implementation of the Pontianak Cultural Map project based on Project-Based Learning (PjBL) proved effective in improving elementary school students’ understanding of local culture. This improvement was demonstrated by an increase in students’ average learning outcomes from 68.41 in the pre-cycle to 72.36 in Cycle I and to 80.91 in Cycle II. Thus, the Pontianak Cultural Map project based on PjBL is effective as an alternative learning method to enhance elementary school students’ understanding of local culture.
