Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of Smart Snakes and Ladders (UTAR) media on the tolerance attitude of fifth-grade students on the subject of ethnic diversity at SD Negeri 51 Pekanbaru. The research is motivated by the still low tolerance and cooperation attitudes of students and the use of learning media that has not been able to increase learning participation optimally. The study used a quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental One Group Pre-test–Post-test design. The research sample consisted of 20 fifth-grade A students selected using saturated sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, while data analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk normality test, Paired Sample t-Test, simple linear regression, Effect Size Cohen's d, and descriptive analysis. The results showed that UTAR media had a positive and significant effect on students' tolerance attitudes with a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 (<0.05), an effect size Cohen's d value of 2.76 (very large effect category), and a coefficient of determination (R Square) value of 0.450. The average tolerance score increased from 78.50 to 91.62, with a change in the category from 75% of students in the good category to 100% in the good category. Thus, the Smart Snakes and Ladders (UTAR) media effectively increases tolerance through interactive, collaborative, contextual, and student-centered learning.
