Abstract

This study is titled “Analysis of Personal, Temporal, and Spatial Deixis in Tere Liye’s Novel *Bibi Gill* and Its Contribution to Indonesian Language Learning.” The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze the forms of personal, temporal, and spatial deixis in Tere Liye’s novel *Bibi Gill*, as well as to examine their contribution to Indonesian language learning. This is a qualitative descriptive study using a pragmatic approach. The data in this study consist of words, phrases, or expressions containing deictic elements sourced from the text of Tere Liye’s novel *Bibi Gill*, which were collected using the read-and-record technique. The results of the study show that there were a total of 719 instances of deictic data, divided into three types: 658 instances of personal deictics, 20 instances of temporal deictics, and 41 instances of locative deictics. The most dominant type of deictic found was personal deictics, indicating that this novel is dominated by interactions between characters and a narrative focused on the speakers. The results of this study make a tangible contribution to Indonesian language learning for both teachers and students. For teachers, this study aids in designing lessons, improving the accuracy of language assessment, supporting the development of systematic teaching materials, and identifying students’ language errors. For students, an understanding of deictics helps improve their comprehension of communicative context, linguistic politeness, text comprehension, and confidence in interacting with others.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of presentation and uncover the meaning of Li Ped'jo’s recitations in the Pedo'a dance during the traditional harvest ceremony of the Sabu community in Raemude Village, West Sabu Subdistrict, Sabu Raijua Regency. This study employs a qualitative approach using descriptive methods. The research data consists of the Li Ped'jo narrative recited by Mone Ped'jo during the performance of the Pedo'a dance. The data was collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and note-taking, and was then analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings show that the performance of the Pedo'a dance consists of Mone Ped'jo as the leader of the chant, Da'u Pedo'a as the dancers, the wearing of traditional attire, kedu'e as the rhythmic accompaniment, dance movements, and Li Ped'jo’s recitation as a medium for conveying cultural messages. Li Ped’jo’s recitation contains four main meanings: a religious meaning as an expression of gratitude and supplication to God; a sociological meaning that reflects togetherness and solidarity; a historical meaning that describes the origins of the Sabu people; and an aesthetic meaning evident through the beauty of the language, rhythm, and word choice. Thus, Li Ped'jo serves not only as a dance accompaniment but also as a medium for passing down cultural, moral, and spiritual values to the Sabu community.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the symbolic meanings in the Jingitiu death ritual discourses among the Sabu Raijua community. The study was motivated by the continued preservation of the Jingitiu death ritual, which incorporates traditional discourses with cultural symbols that reflect the belief system and values of the Sabu community. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. Data in the form of ritual discourses were collected through observation, interviews with traditional leaders and community members, and documentation in Raedewa Village, West Sabu Subdistrict, Sabu Raijua Regency. Data analysis was conducted through identification, classification, and interpretation based on the categories of icon, index, and symbol, followed by the drawing of conclusions. The research findings indicate that the symbolic meaning in the Jingitiu death ritual discourse is manifested through three categories of signs. Icons include the water of life, adju herai (a wooden support), and provisions for the spirit. Indices are evident in the purification of the corpse, the binding of sins, the digging of the grave, and the liberation of the spirit. Symbols represent the spirit’s journey, purity, self-purification, and family reverence. In conclusion, the Jingitiu death ritual discourse serves not only as a means of traditional communication but also as a medium for transmitting religious values, honoring ancestors, and preserving the cultural identity of the Sabu Raijua community.
