Abstract

Background: Anemia remains one of the most common nutritional problems among adolescent girls, particularly in developing countries. Poor nutritional status during adolescence increases the risk of iron deficiency and anemia due to rapid growth, increased nutritional demands, and menstrual blood loss. Identifying the association between nutritional status and anemia is essential for developing effective prevention strategies. Research Objective: This study aims to determine the association between nutritional status and the incidence of anemia among adolescent girls in Makassar, Indonesia. Methods: This analytical observational study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 41 adolescent girls aged 15–19 years were recruited using purposive sampling. Nutritional status was assessed using Body Mass Index-for-Age (BMI/A) based on the World Health Organization growth standards, while anemia status was determined by measuring hemoglobin concentration using a portable digital hemoglobin analyzer. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Most respondents had normal nutritional status (56.1%), while 22.0% were underweight and 22.0% were overweight or obese. The prevalence of anemia was 41.5%. Bivariate analysis revealed a statistically significant association between nutritional status and anemia (p = 0.021). Adolescent girls with underweight nutritional status had a higher prevalence of anemia than those with normal nutritional status. Conclusion: Nutritional status was significantly associated with anemia among adolescent girls. Maintaining optimal nutritional status through balanced dietary intake, routine nutritional assessment, and regular anemia screening is essential to reduce anemia prevalence and improve adolescent health. These findings provide evidence for strengthening school-based nutrition education and anemia prevention programs.

Abstract

Background: Maternal nutritional status during pregnancy plays a fundamental role in fetal growth and is a major determinant of infant birth weight. Poor maternal nutrition increases the risk of low birth weight (LBW), which remains a significant public health concern due to its association with neonatal morbidity, mortality, impaired growth, and long-term health complications. Understanding the relationship between maternal nutritional status and birth weight is essential for strengthening maternal and child health interventions. Research Objective: This study aimed to determine the association between maternal nutritional status during pregnancy and infant birth weight in the working area of the Tamalanrea Community Health Center, Makassar. Methods: A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in July 2025. The study included 25 mothers selected through purposive sampling. Secondary data were obtained from maternal and child health records and medical records at the Tamalanrea Community Health Center. Maternal nutritional status was categorized as good or poor, while infant birth weight was classified as normal birth weight or low birth weight. Descriptive statistics were used for univariate analysis, and the Chi-square test was performed to assess the association between variables at a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Among the respondents, 60.0% had good nutritional status, while 40.0% had poor nutritional status. Most infants (68.0%) were born with normal birth weight, whereas 32.0% had low birth weight. The Chi-square analysis revealed a statistically significant association between maternal nutritional status and infant birth weight (p = 0.021). Mothers with poor nutritional status were more likely to deliver low birth weight infants than mothers with adequate nutritional status. Conclusion: Maternal nutritional status during pregnancy is significantly associated with infant birth weight. Strengthening nutritional screening, nutrition education, and routine antenatal care is essential to improve maternal nutritional status and reduce the incidence of low birth weight.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding provides essential nutrition and immunological protection during the first six months of life. However, many mothers discontinue breastfeeding because of limited knowledge, low self-confidence, lactation difficulties, family pressure, and work-related barriers. Continuous support from midwives may improve breastfeeding success. Research Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of midwife-led support in improving exclusive breastfeeding success among breastfeeding mothers in Makassar. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group was conducted from January to July 2025. Seventy-two breastfeeding mothers were recruited through consecutive sampling and allocated to intervention and control groups, with 36 participants in each group. The intervention included counselling, practical breastfeeding assistance, family involvement, scheduled follow-up, digital communication, and return-to-work preparation for six months. The control group received routine maternal and child health services. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, the chi-square test, comparative tests, and multivariable logistic regression. Results: Six-month exclusive breastfeeding success was significantly higher in the intervention group than in the control group (77.8% versus 50.0%; p=0.014). Midwife-led support increased breastfeeding knowledge and self-efficacy and reduced positioning problems, nipple pain, perceived insufficient milk, and early formula introduction. Mothers receiving the intervention had 3.82 times greater adjusted odds of exclusive breastfeeding success (95% CI: 1.31–11.13). Conclusion: Structured and continuous midwife-led support effectively improved complete six-month exclusive breastfeeding. Its integration into routine maternal and child health services is recommended.
