Abstract

The transition from university to the professional world often triggers profound anxiety among final-year students, a phenomenon commonly known as the quarter-life crisis (QLC). This condition is frequently exacerbated by individual economic uncertainty. This study aims to analyze the influence of financial stress on the quarter-life crisis among final-year students at Universitas Negeri Semarang. Beyond academic pressures, contemporary final-year students grapple with economic realities that subtly erode their psychological stability as they prepare for societal integration. The study employed a quantitative approach with a causal-associative design. It involved 394 respondents aged 18 to 25 years (enrolled in semesters 7 to 13), selected through simple random sampling. The research instruments consisted of a highly reliable adapted financial stress scale (α = 0.97) and a quarter-life crisis scale (α = 0.926), both utilizing a 4-point Likert scale. Data were collected online and analyzed using simple linear regression. The results revealed a significant positive influence of financial stress on the quarter-life crisis (r = 0.703; p < 0.05). These findings indicate that financial stress significantly contributes to the heightened intensity of existential crises; the higher the perceived economic pressure, the greater the students' vulnerability to future uncertainty and identity crises. A distinguishing feature of this study is the finding that financial stress acts as a primary catalyst for "career paralysis," wherein economic burdens not only induce distress but actively hinder students' capacity to make long-term life decisions. From a practical standpoint, these findings are expected to serve as a foundation for university policies to establish comprehensive support systems, including psychological counseling and financial management education, to mitigate the negative impacts of post-university transitions.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of cognitive flexibility as a protective factor against suicidal ideation among final-year undergraduate students in Central Java. Grounded in the Fluid Vulnerability Theory and the Suicidal Mode framework, this research examines how internal cognitive mechanisms regulate the activation of suicide-related affective systems under academic stress. A correlational quantitative design was employed, involving 252 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (CFI) and the Revised Suicide Ideation Scale (R-SIS), both of which demonstrated strong psychometric properties. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant negative relationship between cognitive flexibility and suicidal ideation (β = -0.179, p < .01), indicating that the higher cognitive flexibility predicts lower levels of suicidal thoughts. Furthermore, cognitive flexibility significantly reduced both covert (passive desire) and overt (active planning) dimensions of suicidal ideation. These findings highlight cognitive flexibility as a transdiagnostic protective mechanism that disrupts the activation of suicidal mode by enabling adaptive cognitive reappraisal and alternative problem-solving strategies. The study contributes to the literature by shifting the focus from external stressors to internal cognitive processes, offering implications for preventive interventions in higher education settings.

Abstract

Dating violence remains a significant issue among young women and may have adverse psychological consequences, including reduced assertiveness. Assertiveness is considered an important personal skill that enables individuals to express their thoughts, feelings, and boundaries effectively, thereby reducing vulnerability to unhealthy relationships. This study aimed to examine the relationship between personality type (extrovert–introvert) and assertiveness among young adult women who have experienced dating violence. A quantitative correlational design was employed involving 228 female participants aged 18–25 years who met the research criteria. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Personality type was measured using the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI), while assertiveness was assessed using an assertiveness scale adapted from Alberti and Emmons. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product-Moment correlation, and independent sample t-test. The results showed a positive but weak relationship between personality type and assertiveness (r = 0.124, p 0.05), indicating that the relationship was not statistically significant. Furthermore, no significant difference in assertiveness levels was found between extrovert and introvert participants (t = 0.631, p = 0.529). These findings suggest that personality type is not a determining factor of assertiveness among women who have experienced dating violence. Other psychological factors, such as self-esteem and the impact of violence experiences, may play a more substantial role in shaping assertive behavior. Future studies are recommended to explore additional factors influencing assertiveness among victims of dating violence using broader and more diverse samples.
