Abstract

The escalating ecological crisis demonstrates the limitations of technocratic environmental governance that prioritizes regulatory and instrumental approaches while neglecting the ontological dimensions of human–nature relations. Modern environmental ethics tends to perceive ecological action merely as a form of normative obligation, thereby overlooking the cosmological structures that shape ecological consciousness within society. This study aims to examine Javanese Islamic cosmology through the perspective of living cosmology as an operative framework embedded within socio-religious life. This study employs a philosophical-hermeneutic analysis to interpret cosmological practices, symbols, and narratives within the Javanese Islamic tradition. The findings reveal that environmental ethics in Javanese Islamic cosmology is grounded in an understanding of the interconnectedness between God, humans, and nature. The study further demonstrates that ecological responsibility is manifested through spiritual self-restraint, reverence toward nature, and reciprocal ethical relations with the environment. This study argues that the ecological crisis reflects a rupture in the cosmological consciousness of modern humanity.
