Abstract

Introduction: The nutritional status of adolescents remains a major public health problem, particularly in developing countries where undernutrition and overnutrition coexist simultaneously. In Tuban Regency, East Java, the prevalence of nutritional status among adolescents includes severely thin (23%), thin (15%), normal (53%), overweight (29%), and obese (11%). Aims: This study aimed to determine the correlation between knowledge of reading nutrition facts labels, compliance with reading nutrition labels, physical activity, and nutritional status among adolescents in Tuban Regency. Methods: This study employed a quantitative cross-sectional design conducted from April to June 2024 in Tuban Regency, East Java, Indonesia. The study population comprised 820 adolescents, from whom 268 respondents were selected using simple random sampling. The inclusion criteria included adolescents aged 16–18 years who resided in Tuban Regency and provided informed consent. The independent variables were knowledge of reading nutrition facts labels, compliance with reading nutrition labels, and physical activity, whereas the dependent variable was nutritional status measured using the body mass index (BMI) based on the World Health Organization BMI-for-age standards. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed using the Spearman rank correlation test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Significant correlations were found between nutritional status and knowledge of reading nutrition facts labels (p = 0.031), compliance with reading nutrition labels (p = 0.015), and physical activity (p = 0.015). Conclusion: Significant correlations existed between knowledge of reading nutrition facts labels, compliance with reading nutrition labels, physical activity, and nutritional status among adolescents in Tuban Regency. Strengthening nutrition literacy and promoting physical activity among adolescents are important strategies for improving nutritional status and preventing nutritional problems in Indonesia.
