Abstract

This article examines the representation of the subaltern in Noviantika Fadillah’s short story Nyawa Seorang Gundik using a postcolonial perpective. This study aimed to analyse the subaltern positions of Sulastri and Saritem within the colonial social structure, as well as to examine the silencing and marginalisation of women under Ducth colonial rule. This study employed a qualitative approach using content analysis of the short story as it primary object. Data were collected through intensive reading, textual documentation, and interpretative analysis, which were then analysed using Spivak’s concept of subalternity. The result of this research include, among other servitude as a apace of layered oppression, the silencing of Sulastri and Saritem which reflects Spivak’s thesis “Can the Subaltern Speak?”, the transformatition of Sulastri’s identity into Maria van der Wijc, and the social distance between the natives and the colonizers through the use of language.
