Abstract

Introduction: The SWITCH handover method in the operating room has traditionally been conducted verbally without standardized documentation. Effective handover is critical in perioperative settings, where accurate and timely communication is essential for patient safety. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of implementing a documentation-based SWITCH handover method on nurses’ job satisfaction during the handover process. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was used. The independent variable was the implementation of the documentation-based SWITCH handover method, while the dependent variable was nurses’ job satisfaction. The study population included all surgical nurses working in the operating room, with total sampling applied to 41 eligible respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing job satisfaction before and after the intervention. Paired t-test analysis was conducted to determine differences between pretest and posttest scores. Results: Following the implementation of the documentation-based SWITCH handover method, the number of satisfied nurses increased, with no respondents reporting dissatisfaction. The mean job satisfaction score improved from 65.98 (pretest) to 70.12 (posttest). Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (p = 0.005; α = 0.05), indicating that the intervention had a positive effect on nurses’ job satisfaction. Conclusions: The documentation-based SWITCH handover method significantly improves nurses’ job satisfaction in the operating room. Ongoing training and standardization of handover practices are recommended to enhance communication quality and support better clinical performance. Future research should employ controlled designs with larger samples to confirm these findings and assess long-term outcomes.
