Abstract

The increasing volume of organic waste in traditional markets, particularly from vegetable and fruit scraps, necessitates the implementation of efficient waste management technologies to transform it into valuable products. This study aims to characterize the chemical quality of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) produced from the fermentation of vegetable and fruit waste at Susumbolan Traditional Market, Tolitoli Regency. The research employed a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications: P1 (100% vegetable waste), P2 (100% fruit waste), P3 (a mixture of 50% vegetable waste and 50% fruit waste), and P4 (a mixture of 45% vegetable waste, 45% fruit waste, and 10% biochar). Data were analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% level. The results indicate that formulation variations significantly affected pH, Nitrogen (N) content, and Phosphorus (P) content, but did not have a significant effect on Potassium (K) content. The P3 treatment yielded the highest Nitrogen content (1.64%), while the highest Phosphorus content (0.23%) was observed in P4. The addition of biochar in the P4 treatment was effective in stabilizing the pH to 6.17, thus meeting the pH quality standard threshold for LOF according to the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture Number 261/KPTS/SR.310/M/4/2019. However, the macronutrient content (N, P, and K) in all treatments remained below the minimum national standard thresholds. Although a 10% biochar formulation proved effective as an acidity neutralizing agent (pH buffer), further optimization through mineral fortification is required to ensure the macronutrient content reaches the required technical standards.
