Abstract

This study aims to describe lecturers' perceptions of Human-Centered Leadership practices and to explore their relationship with work engagement in private higher education institutions in Tolitoli Regency, Indonesia. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and consisted of permanent lecturers and institutional leaders from STIE Mujahidin Tolitoli and Universitas Madako Tolitoli. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and SaldaƱa, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that most lecturers perceive Human-Centered Leadership as a leadership approach that promotes open communication, trust, appreciation of lecturers' contributions, and support for professional development. These practices contribute to stronger work engagement, reflected in lecturers' enthusiasm, dedication, and commitment to carrying out the three pillars of higher education. Nevertheless, limited communication and insufficient lecturer involvement in decision-making remain challenges in several institutions. The study highlights the importance of strengthening human-centered leadership practices as a strategic human resource management approach to enhance lecturers' work engagement in private higher education institutions.
