Abstract

Purpose – This study describes seventh-grade students’ mathematical connection ability in rational number topics at an Islamic Integrated Junior High School in Pekanbaru, prompted by recurring difficulties with cross-conceptual and contextual problem solving. Methodology – Using a descriptive qualitative design and purposive sampling, three Grade VII students were selected to represent high (DP), medium (KY), and low (IS) achievement. Data were gathered through a written test (three rational-number tasks) and in-depth interviews guided by NCTM (2000) mathematical connection indicators. Analysis included data reduction, indicator-based coding, test–interview triangulation, and conclusion drawing. Findings – DP satisfied all three indicators consistently. KY met some indicators but showed weaknesses in symbolization and contextual application. IS showed limited connections within mathematics, across disciplines, and to daily-life situations. Connection ability varied with conceptual understanding and independence, suggesting the need for more contextually and integratively focused instruction on rational numbers. Novelty – The study offers detailed qualitative profiles of mathematical connections in rational numbers across three distinct ability levels using NCTM (2000) indicators. Significance – Results support teachers, curriculum developers, and researchers in designing learning tasks and interventions that explicitly cultivate mathematical connections.

Abstract

Purpose – This study analyzes Grade VIII junior high school students’ numeracy ability in statistics based on numeracy indicators. Numeracy is essential for everyday life because it enables individuals to understand, use, and evaluate quantitative information in real-world contexts, including making decisions from data. Methodology – Using a phenomenological approach with a qualitative descriptive design, this study involved 35 Grade VIII students. Data were collected through a numeracy test consisting of numerical description tasks aligned with three indicators: (1) using numbers and basic mathematical symbols, (2) analyzing data in visual form (tables/graphs), and (3) interpreting analytical results as a basis for decision-making. Students’ responses were analyzed descriptively by indicator to determine achievement and identify recurring difficulties. Findings – Performance was highest on using numbers and basic mathematical symbols (82.5%), followed by analyzing visually presented data (61.79%). The lowest achievement was found in interpreting results for decision-making (21.07%). These results suggest that while many students can apply basic numerical procedures and read visual data, they struggle to connect statistical results to justified decisions. Instruction should therefore emphasize interpretation and decision-making through authentic, context-based data tasks. Novelty – This study offers an indicator-based profile of statistical numeracy using numerical description tasks within a phenomenological, qualitative-descriptive framework, revealing decision-making as the weakest indicator. Significance – The findings inform teachers, curriculum developers, and assessment designers in developing learning and assessment strategies that strengthen students’ statistical interpretation and data-driven decision-making skills.

Abstract

This research was carried out with the aim of analyzing the abilities of high school level students in solving relationship and function problems. This research method is a qualitative method with descriptive research type. This research was carried out at one of Pekanbaru High School with subjects in classes X.1 and X.2 at YLPI Pekanbaru High School, with a total of 6 students. The data collection technique used in this research is a written test technique in the form of a description consisting of 2 questions. After the students have completed the questions, the results of the answers will be analyzed by the researcher as a percentage of the students' results and the researchers will conduct interviews with the students regarding the answers they made. Based on the research results, the percentage of the "Visual Representation" indicator was 79.16%, which is included in the high category. Then the indicator "Mathematical Equations or Expressions" was 66.66%, which was included in the high category. Finally, the "Words or Written Text" indicator is 50%, which is in the medium category. Furthermore, the percentage of questions for mathematical representation ability is 80% for question number 1, in the high category and 88.33% for question number 2, in the very high category. So a conclusion can be drawn from the score obtained by the students, namely 84.16%, which is included in the very high category. It is hoped that the results of this research will provide maximum guidance for teachers to develop students' abilities in mathematics, especially relation and function material. Abstract

This study aims to analyse the mathematical problem-solving abilities of middle school students in the context of number patterns. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the research was conducted on eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 3 Tualang. The instruments used included problem-solving tests in the form of essay questions and interviews. Subjects were selected using purposive sampling, consisting of 6 students with varying abilities (high, medium, low). The results show that students have varying abilities in four problem-solving indicators: understanding the problem (50% - medium), planning the solution (8.33% - very low), solving the problem (100% - very high), and reviewing the solution (25% - low). The data indicates that while students are capable of solving problems and understanding the questions, they struggle with planning solutions and reviewing their answers. It is recommended to enhance teaching strategies with more flexible approaches, such as problem-based learning (PBL), to improve students' mathematical problem-solving skills.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning ability is an ability that is considered important for students to have in learning mathematics. The purpose of this study is to describe students' mathematical reasoning ability on the material of Two Variable Linear Equation System . This type of research is a type of research that uses a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Data collection techniques in this study were carried out using observation, test, and interview methods. The test instrument used was 2 essay questions about students' reasoning ability that had been validated. The subjects of this study were 20 students of class VIII 1 SMP Negeri 4 Koto Gasib. Based on the test results, the researcher selected students who had the same ability, then 6 students were selected as representatives of the research subjects based on the category (high, medium and low). The results of this study indicate that students with high initial ability are able to meet all indicators of mathematical reasoning ability. Students with medium ability are not yet able to present mathematical statements in writing, are able to submit conjectures but the steps are not complete, are able to manipulate well, are able to compile evidence of the truth of the solution and are able to draw conclusions correctly and precisely. Students with low abilities are unable to present mathematical statements in writing, are able to submit conjectures but the steps are incomplete, are able to manipulate correctly, but are not yet able to compile evidence for the truth of the solution and finally students are unable to draw conclusions from the answers they have obtained.
