Abstract

This study examines the concept of ignorance (al-jahl) in the Qur’an through a comparative analysis of Jāmi‘ al-Bayān by Imam al-Ṭabari and Tafsir al-Munīr by Wahbah al-Zuhaili, focusing on four verses that explicitly condemn ignorance: Q.S. Al-A‘rāf [7]:199, Hūd [11]:46, An-Naḥl [16]:119, and Al-Furqān [25]:63. The study analyzes how the two exegetes interpret these verses and identifies the similarities and differences in their conceptualizations of al-jahl. It employs a qualitative library-research method with a comparative (tafsīr muqāran) approach; primary data are drawn from the two tafsir works, while secondary data consist of relevant books, journal articles, and other scholarly publications. The findings show that al-Ṭabari interprets ignorance mainly as conduct that deviates from knowledge and divine guidance, relying on the transmitted reports of the early Muslim generations (salaf), whereas al-Zuhaili views it as a condition in which reason and religious values are overtaken by base desires, emotions, and negative impulses. Both exegetes agree that al-jahl extends beyond intellectual unawareness to moral, spiritual, and social deviation, differing mainly in method: al-Ṭabari emphasizes a textual-historical framework, while al-Zuhaili foregrounds ethical, psychological, and contextual dimensions. These findings affirm the continuing relevance of the Qur’anic concept of al-jahl for contemporary character education.
