Abstract

Turning is one of the most widely used machining processes in manufacturing industries, where tool geometry, particularly the cutting angle, significantly influences cutting temperature and tool life. This study was conducted through simulation and experimental turning of ST 41 steel using HSS cutting tools with cutting angle variations of 10°, 12°, and 15°, while other parameters such as cutting speed, depth of cut, and feed rate were kept constant. Cutting temperature was measured using a thermocouple and an infrared thermometer, while tool wear was analyzed using an optical microscope following ISO 3685 standards. The data were analyzed descriptively and statistically to determine the effect of cutting angle variations on cutting temperature and tool wear. The results showed that a larger cutting angle (15°) produced the highest average cutting temperature of 477.77 °C and the most severe tool wear. A smaller cutting angle (10°) resulted in the lowest initial temperature of 355.8 °C but exhibited a sharp increase, reaching an average of 420.47 °C, along with relatively high wear. The most favorable condition was obtained at a cutting angle of 12°, which produced the lowest average temperature of 419.33 °C and the most stable and minimal tool wear.Variation in cutting angle significantly affects cutting temperature and tool wear, with a cutting angle of 12° proven to be the most optimal in maintaining thermal stability and extending tool life during the turning process of ST 41 steel.
