Abstract

The increase in life expectancy in Indonesia is not always accompanied by an adequate quality of life, placing elderly individuals at risk of becoming a burden rather than empowered subjects. This study aims to identify the empowerment factors associated with the quality of life of the elderly and to determine the most dominant factor. The study population comprised elderly individuals aged sixty years and above, with a sample of 120 respondents selected randomly. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. The independent variables consisted of four empowerment dimensions derived from the active ageing framework—namely access to healthcare services, participation in activities, social support, and economic independence—while the dependent variable was quality of life. The analysis was conducted in stages: descriptive analysis to describe the data, correlation analysis to select variables, and multiple linear regression to examine simultaneous relationships. The results indicate that the model is statistically significant simultaneously and explains approximately 35.6% of the variance in quality of life. Social support emerged as the most dominant factor, followed by access to healthcare services and participation in activities, all of which showed positive and significant relationships; age exhibited a negative relationship, whereas economic independence, marital status, and education showed no significant relationships. It is concluded that the quality of life of the elderly is determined more by the extent to which they are socially empowered and provided with service access rather than by demographic or economic attributes. Therefore, elderly empowerment models should prioritize the strengthening of social support and participation. Since the findings are associative in nature, further longitudinal research is warranted.
