Abstract

This study aims to determine the implementation of the sorogan method in improving the ability of students to read classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning) at Pondok Pesantren Asy-Syafi’iyyah. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) based on Kurt Lewin’s model and was conducted in two cycles, consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 10 students participating in kitab kuning learning. Data were collected through observation, kitab kuning reading tests, and documentation. Reading ability was assessed based on fluency, accuracy of vowel markings, nahwu, sharaf, translation, and text comprehension. The results showed an improvement in students’ ability to read kitab kuning after the implementation of the sorogan method. The average score in the pre-cycle was 58.0, with a mastery percentage of 20%. In Cycle I, the average score increased to 68.5, with 50% of students achieving mastery. In Cycle II, the average score increased further to 78.5, with the mastery percentage reaching 80%. These improvements indicate that individual reading practice, direct correction from the teacher, and repeated reading can help students correct reading errors and improve their understanding of kitab kuning texts. Therefore, the sorogan method is recommended as an alternative learning method for improving students’ ability to read kitab kuning, particularly through individualized reading practice, direct teacher correction, and repeated reading activities.
