Abstract

Coconut fiber is one of the natural fiber materials used in making composites. The main problem is the low impact resistance of natural fiber composites, which affects the tensile strength after impact. This study analyzed the effect of mechanical properties on the tensile strength after impact on coconut fiber and palm fiber-based composites with a polymer matrix. Experimental methods were used, with fiber volume fractions ranging from 0 8%, and tested in accordance with ASTM D3039. Impact tests were carried out with a drop-weight impact tester, while tensile tests were carried out with a universal testing machine (UTM). Damage morphology was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Research instruments included impact and tensile test equipment, as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for damage morphology characterization. Data analysis included measures of central tendency, standard deviation, and statistical tests. The results showed that increasing the fiber volume fraction increased impact resistance; the maximum stress was 20.2 MPa for palm fiber and 21.2 MPa for coconut fiber at Vf 8%. It is concluded that the variation in fiber fraction affects post-impact tensile strength and that the balance between tensile properties and impact resistance is important for structural applications.
