Abstract

This article aims to examine the aspects of orality present in the da'wah (preaching) of Gus Bahaudin Nur Salim by applying Walter J. Ong’s theory of orality. It analyzes the ideology behind his interpretation of Qur'anic verses—viewed through theological and fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) lenses—and compares his analogies and reasoning with the written interpretations of contemporary scholars. The study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, detailing Gus Baha’s oral exegesis based on content from three video and audio recordings available on the "Bayt Al-Qur’an" YouTube channel. The findings reveal that Gus Baha’s preaching style aligns with Walter J. Ong’s concept of "secondary orality." This concept refers to societies that utilize modern technologies—such as mobile phones, radio, and television—to create new forms of oral communication; even in the presence of writing technology, the society's modes of thought and communication remain influenced by oral patterns. Furthermore, Gus Baha’s oral explanations of Qur'anic verses show no significant divergence from contemporary exegeses, such as Tafsir Al-Misbah
